MADURAI, JUNE 8. A one-day training programme on solid waste management, health and hygiene for the heads of village panchayats was organised by the district administration and Exnora International at the Collectorate here today. Inaugurating the programme, the Collector, Mr. Raajendran, said waste could turn out to be a money-spinner to panchayats, if the local bodies set up compost yards. The fertilizer made from biodegradable waste, he suggested, could be sold to farmers. Stressing the need for keeping the panchayats clean and tidy, Mr. Raajendran said dumping of garbage on roads and in residential areas was a cause for concern, because it could pose a health hazard. But this problem could be solved if the local bodies established compost yards and converted the waste collected from houses and dumping yards into fertilizer. The local bodies, he said, could segregate the waste at source and compost the biodegradable waste. The plastic waste could be utilised for laying roads. He said that during his tenure as Collector in Namakkal, 11 village panchayats were declared garbage-free, thanks to the successful implementation of the solid waste management programme. The District Rural Development Agency Project Officer, R. Krishnasamy, the Assistant Director of Panchayats, R. Venkatachalam, the Exnora International founder-president, M. B. Nirmal, and the Madurai EI president, S. G. Mohan, spoke.
