This Day That Age
An Egyptian Foreign Ministry spokesman said on June 8 in Cairo that a new move to end the Anglo-Egyptian deadlock over the future of the Suez Canal base might be announced shortly. At the same time it was learned that the Indian Government had made a new proposal to Egypt concerning reactivisation of the Canal base which is one of the two main differences between the countries. The other is whether or not British technicians should wear uniforms. The Indian proposal is reported to envisage setting up a committee composed of an Egyptian, a Briton and an Indian whose task would be to define the circumstances in which British troops would be allowed to return to the Canal base. The Indian proposal was made by Mr. V. K. Krishna Menon, India's representative to the United Nations, after talks with Mr. Anthony Eden, British Foreign Secretary, in Paris and Geneva.
