VILLUPURAM, JUNE 9. K. Periaiah, who took charge as the Superintendent of Police here today, warned that anti-social elements would be dealt with severely to ensure peace in the district. Talking to presspersons, Mr. Periaiah said the haunts of anti-social elements would be put under special surveillance. The officer, who had been decorated with the President's gallantry medal for having courageously taken on hooligans, said he would firmly deal with rowdies and `dadas'. Asked whether he would draw up a plan to track down members of the Tamil National Liberation Army who were moving from one district to another (particularly Villupuram and Cuddalore), Mr Periaiah said he would not spare anti-social elements. Assuring a transparent administration, the SP promised to eradicate the illicit arrack menace. Action would be taken against personnel who connived with liquor peddlers, he said. When it was pointed out that too many fatal accidents were occurring on Villupuram highways, the SP said he would study the problem and take suitable remedial measures such as checking speeding and drunken driving. On the Friends of Police, the SP said he would not allow members to misuse their position (there are allegations that some members are arbitrarily collecting fine from motorists). Night patrolling would be intensified and traffic rules would be strictly enforced, he said. Mr. Periaiah has served as an Additional Deputy Superintendent of Police and later as an SP in the Special Task Force (formed to track the forest brigand Veerappan), and as an SP in Thiruvarur (just for five days) and Dharmapuri districts. No stranger to Villupuram, Mr. Periaiah served as DSP at Mylam and the Villupuram sub-division in 1991.
