The mobile campaign van against child labour being flagged off in Salem on Wednesday.
SALEM, JUNE 9 . To create awareness among the villagers about the ill effects of child labour, the officials of the Department of Labour here have come out with a novel campaign. They have engaged a mobile musical troupe, run by singers visually challenged to spread the message on the social evil. The campaign, against child labour in Salem district, known for its high prevalence, will target villagers who tend to send their wards to work in various establishments in nearby towns and cities to supplement their poor wages. Inspector of Labour, G. Mahalingam, told The Hindu that the singers would script the lyrics on child labour. The troupe will visit every village in the district from 5-8 p.m. Their endeavour will be complemented by the presence of a team of officials and representatives from Department of Labour, Education, panchayats and non-Governmental organisations. Deputy Commissioner of Labour, K. Alagesan, inaugurated the campaign today. Meanwhile the Collector, A. Sukumaran, has said that June 12 will be observed as Anti-Child Labour Day in all village panchayats, town panchayats, unions, municipalities and Corporation of the district. He has urged the people to send their children to schools and warned that employing children below the age of 14 would attract severe punishment.
