Teachers union's appeal to CM

By Our Special Correspondent

TIRUPATI. June 9. The State Teachers Union (STU) on Wednesday called upon the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, to initiate steps to file Special Leave Petition (SLP) in the Supreme Court seeking immediate disposal of the cases pending before the apex court regarding the transfer and promotion issues of Government school teachers in the State.

The State General Secretary of the STU, P. Subba Reddy, underlined the need for filing the SLP as otherwise there was danger of the promotion and transfer issues of the teachers getting stalled. Addressing the district unit of the STU at Tirupati, Mr. Reddy said an STU delegation had met the Chief Minister recently to seek his immediate intervention in sorting-out a number of unresolved issues. The delegation will meet the Chief Minister again on June 11.

The STU leader said the Chief Minister was also requested to get a `Presidential Order' passed regarding the services of the Panchayat Raj teachers under Article-371.

The STU demanded that the Government scrap the `school committees' constituted by the then TDP Government on the ground that they were not serving any useful purpose.

Another demand was that textbooks should be distributed free of cost to students of all castes and religions alike up to high school level and providing staff and permanent building facility to all the upgraded high schools. Reddy said that the STU would not tolerate any move to do away with counselling system vis-a-vis the promotion and transfer of Government teachers.
