Nellore
By Our Staff Reporter
NELLORE, JUNE 9. District units of the Chambers of Commerce and Oil Millers and Dealers'Association have refuted the allegations of the Bharatiya Janata Party that the price of essential commodities have gone up in Nellore district in the last 15 days, giving an indication that the rise was mainly due to the Congress taking over the reins in State. Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, the functionaries -- S. Penchala Reddy, D. Lakshminarayana, Tirumala Rao and Srinivasulu -- claimed that the prices of several commodities have in fact come down. Reeling out statistics, they showed that the price of palmolein oil (10 kg.) was Rs. 468 before elections and now it was Rs. 416. The price of a tin of 15 kg. of refined oil which was Rs. 830 had now come down by Rs. 10, whereas a quintal of green gram now stood at Rs. 2,900 compared to Rs. 3,000 before the elections. Only the price of massourie rice which stood at Rs. 1,600 per quintal marginally rose by Rs. 10. The functionaries wanted to know whether the BJP at any time of its reign cared to know the reasons for the frequent hike in prices of petrol and diesel. They contended that the BJP had not done its homework and its aim in sending a fax report to the State Government alleging sudden increase in prices of essential commodities was just to create confusion among the people and tarnish the image of the merchant community. They maintained that as a business community they supported welfare measures of all Governments irrespective of political ideology. However to brand the entire business community as being responsible for the alleged hike in prices of commodities only in Nellore district, was nothing but attempting to take political mileage for selfish reasons, they contended.
