Kin of deceased NRI Goans to get compensation

By Our Staff Correspondent

PANAJI, JUNE 9. The NRI (Non-Resident Indian) Facilitation Centre set up by the State Government has decided to grant a compensation of Rs. 2

lakh to the kin of

NRI Goans who die in accidents.

This is apart from the insurance coverage the Centre is extending to

NRI Goans in arrange-

ment with insurance companies.

Disclosing this to presspersons here on Wednesday, the Chairman of the centre, Chandrakant Keni, said a decision to this effect had been taken after the killing of an NRI Goan in the terrorist attack at Al Khobar in Saudi Arabia recently.

The Chief Minister, who had read about the incident in newspapers, had enquired about the payment of compensation with the authorities concerned.

He had directed the centre to take a decision about the compensation with immediate effect, Mr. Keni said.

Joe John Fernandes was one of the eight Indians who were killed in the terrorist shootout at Al Khobar in Saudi Arabia on May 29.

He was working as a housekeeping supervisor with a private company, according to reports reaching here.

The Mormugao MP, Churchil Alemao, has said that the body of Fernandes will be brought to Goa on Friday.

He had taken up the issue of giving compensation to the

family members of Fernandes with the authorities concerned, Mr. Alemao said.
