SIRSI, JUNE 9. A public meeting will be held on Monday at Gurubhavan here to discuss the implementation of the Marigadde drinking water project. A resolution to this effect was adopted at a meeting of the Sirsi City Municipal Council here on Monday. The resolution was adopted following protests by villagers in the Marigadde area, on the banks of the Aghanashini, against the implementation of the project. The project is being implemented by the Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development and Finance Corporation (KUIDFC), and the Asian Development Bank has released Rs. 32 crore for it. Thousands of people in the Tyagli, Kansur, Kodsar, Hasargod, and Harisikatta gram panchayat areas have launched a protest against the project. They have even floated the Marigadde Jalabalakedarara Sangh for the purpose. The association has accused the Sirsi City Municipal Council and the KUIDFC officials of misleading the people and the Government by maintaining that there is enough water in the Aghanashini at Marigadde. It has demanded that a comprehensive study be conducted at Marigadde to take into account the biodiversity of the area, water used for agriculture and for domestic purposes, and fisheries. The protesters say that there are six tanks in Sirsi town, which can be used to meet the drinking water needs of people. Of them, only one is desilted while the others are being used as dumping grounds, the protesters add. But municipal authorities and leaders of various political parties say that one cannot object to the implementation of drinking water supply schemes. Also, only 10 per cent of the people are against the project, they note.
