Another `mahaprakaram' for Tirumala temple to be studied

By Our Staff Reporter

TIRUMALA, JUNE 9. The State Government will make an in-depth study of the issue of construction of another `mahaprakaram' (precinct) to the hill temple of Lord Venkateswara.

Talking to mediapersons on Wednesday, the Endowment Minister, M.Satyanarayana Rao, who is on his maiden visit to the temple town after assuming office, said there were too many contradictory opinions being expressed regarding the construction of the additional precinct to the hill temple. The Government would go in for a detailed study before arriving at a decision.

The Minister, who spoke on similar lines regarding the Rs. 90-crore proposed ropeway to Tirumala, said he would speak to the TTD authorities and get first-hand information.

Fielding questions from reporters regarding implementation of master plan and its implications and the criticism regarding certain alleged violations in the temple rituals, the Minister said though he was aware of the issues plaguing the temple town, he was yet to get full information. Unwanted comments and criticism regarding the temple should not be encouraged as it would hurt devotees of the Lord, he said.

The Minister reiterated his commitment to save the temple lands spread all over the State. People had munificently donated lands worth several crores of rupees to temples and it was pathetic to learn that most of the temple lands were under encroachment, he said. Recovery of temple lands from encroachers was on top of his agenda.

In reply to a question, the Minister said there would not be any diversion of TTD funds.

The Minister, who reached Tirumala last night, offered his prayers for the second time this morning in the temple before leaving for Tirupati to participate in the locally arranged programmes.
