Goods train derails, traffic disrupted

NELLORE, JUNE 9. More than 13 empty oil tankers of a goods train derailed between Kondagutta and Vendodu in Nellore district on Wednesday evening, throwing railway traffic out of gear and causing severe inconvenience to passengers.

The Superintendent of Police (Railways), Guntakal, K. Venugopala Rao, under whose division the derailment area comes, said that the tankers fell on the trunk line, causing disruption. He said that there was no loss of life and the exact cause of the mishap could be established after the statutory probe. Special railway police teams have been despatched to the spot for relief. According to the SP, restoration of normal traffic may take a couple of hours. The mishap occurred between Renigunta and Gudur sections.

Following the derailment, passengers at Nellore railway station were stranded due to uncertainty over the incoming trains. The Station Superintendent, C. Konda Reddy, said the mishap occurred between 12 and 16 km. of the line and most of the trains have been diverted. There was no delay in the movement of trains from Chennai side, but there was bound to be a delay in trains emanating from Tirupati, including the Padmavati and Narayanadri Expresses.

As per another report, 22 oil tankers got derailed, out of which eight capsized and three landed on the upbeat section, causing disruption. However, according to the latest information by the S.P. Guntakal, at 8.20 p.m. two tankers were removed and only one remains to be cleared. It is expected that the traffic on a single track would be restored by 11 p.m. today, while normal traffic would be restored by Thursday afternoon.

Trains cancelled, diversified

Our Vijayawada Staff Reporter writes:

Meanwhile, the derailment has caused the cancellation/diversion or rescheduling of the following trains on Wednesday. Train No 530 Gudur-Tirupati is cancelled. Train No 2646 Nizamabad-Ernakulam, 2626 New Delhi Trivandrum7028 Hyderbad-Trivandrum, 7010 Kakinada-Bangalore, 6318 Jammu Tawi-Kanyakumari Express are diverted via Gudur and Chennai. Train No 8613, Hatia-Yeshwwanthpur Express will be diverted via Guntur and Guntakal and train no 2763 Tirupati-Secunderabad Padmavathi Express is rescheduled to start at 22 hrs from Tirupati instead of 17.05 hrs.

No 7423 Tirupati-Secunderabad Narayandri Express is rescheduled from Tirupati to start at 22.15 hrs. No 7487 Tirupati-Visakhapatnam Tirumala Express is rescheduled to leave Tirupati at 22.30 hrs instead of 19.30 hrs, according to a spokesman of the SCR Vijayawada division here on Wednesday night.
