Amar Singh calls on Vajpayee

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI, JUNE 9. The Samajwadi Party general secretary, Amar Singh, has once again set political circles abuzz by calling on the former Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, at his Race Course Road residence this morning. The meeting between the two leaders reportedly lasted over 20 minutes.

Mr. Singh's decision to call on Mr. Vajpayee assumes significance coming as it does in the backdrop of the strained relations between the SP and the Congress and also the recent statements made by Rahul Gandhi, Congress MP, in Amethi with regard to the Uttar Pradesh Government.

Both Mr. Singh and Ashok Tandon, spokesman for Mr. Vajpayee, confirmed that the meeting took place.

Talking to The Hindu, Mr. Singh sought to downplay the meeting saying that it was only natural that since Mr. Vajpayee was an MP from Lucknow, he should talk to a representative of the Uttar Pradesh Government.

This is the first interaction between Mr. Singh and a BJP leader since the Lok Sabha elections. Mr. Vajpayee had embarrassed the SP by claiming common ideological ground between the two parties. He had also claimed that the SP would support the National Democratic Alliance after the polls.
