SHIMOGA, JUNE 9. Raids by the Corps of Detectives on rice godowns in Shimoga, which continued for the second day on Wednesday, have reportedly indicated the involvement of local rice traders in what has come to be known as the multi-crore rice scam.

Acting on a tip off, the CoD team arrived here on Tuesday to conduct raids on several godowns of rice mills.

According to information, the CoD team seized documents, which reportedly revealed that a trading agency located in the APMC Yard supplied nearly 200 truckloads of rice to a private shipping concern.

It was said that a few local traders purchased the rice meant for beneficiaries under the Centrally-sponsored "Kooligagi Kaalu" (Food-for-Work Scheme) as part of the drought relief measures, through middlemen at a cheaper rate.

The CoD team raided godowns at Machenahalli, Tevarachatnahalli and Seshadripuram but it was not known immediately whether the illegally stocked rice was seized.

But the team reportedly took possession of the documents pertaining to the illegal rice deal.

It was said that several rice traders fled following reports that the CoD team had arrived in the city. The raids are likely to continue on Thursday.
