BANGALORE, JUNE 9. The National Commission for Minorities has asked the District Magistrate, Davangere, to pay compensation to the victims of the communal violence at Malebennur in that district on November 28, last. Responding to a report from a fact finding committee of the South India Cell for Human Rights Education and Monitoring (SICHREM), which visited the village, the National Commission has written to the District Magistrate, referring to the incidents of November when property was damaged and two women were allegedly gang raped. Acting again on the committee report, the National Human Rights Commission, New Delhi, has sent notices to the Director General of Police and the Chief Secretary, asking them to send information about the Malebennur incidents. The SICHREM team, which visited the village and spoke to the local people, found that a fight between two persons led to violence, damage to a water pipeline and several families moving out of the village, fearing for their safety. The local police did not accept the related complaints and later, on pressure, registered cases under sections not related to communal violence, the team alleged.
