Kurnool
By Our Staff Reporter
KURNOOL, JUNE 9. The modernisation work on the KC Canal in Kurnool city is being hampered by encroachments on the canal bank. The entire stretch of the canal, except a distance of 1.6 km from the Railway bridge to the Anand theatre, has been widened and strengthened. People living in huts along this stretch of the canal bund have refused to vacate the place on grounds that they have been living here for 20 years. The carrying capacity of the canal is expected to increase to 3,800 cusecs once the canal is modernised. According to an estimate, 34 families will have to be shifted temporarily for the work to progress. Officials claim the families could occupy the stretch once the work was done, but the families have asked for house-sites. The other side of the bank has been encroached upon by the KVR College, whose compound wall runs alongside the canal bund. For the construction material to be carried, a passage will have to be made through the compound wall. The authorities have come under criticism for taking action against those polluting the canal. Sewage was flowing into the canal at several places and people used its bed as a dump yard. As the canal water is used for drinking water needs, the purity of the water must be maintained. The modernisation works must be executed before reopening of the canal, as the monsoon is approaching. The canal is planned to be reopened in the first week of July if the flow in the river stabilises.
