Cadet training to be linked to degree

VISAKHAPATNAM: Deck cadet training for merchant Navy is being linked to degree qualification, the Director-General of Shipping, G.S. Sahni, has said.

Addressing the convocation of the Naval Maritime Academy here on Wednesday, he said that the Government had taken note of the grievance that deck cadets in the merchant Navy were missing out on a degree qualification unlike those preparing for marine engineering.

As part of the reforms being ushered in training, a memorandum of understanding was signed with IGNOU (Indira Gandhi National Open University) for award of degrees for deck cadets during the course of their training.

Further, Mr. Sahni disclosed that there would be greater emphasis on hands-on experience during cadet training.

Woman run over by train

CUDDAPAH: A 27-year-old married woman, Nazeema Begum, of Proddatur, was run over by a train in which she travelled, when she slipped while alighting from it in the Yerraguntla railway station on Wednesday.

The woman was crushed under the wheels of the Mumbai-Tirupati Balaji Express at Yerraguntla, according to the police. She is survived by husband, who is away at Kuwait, and two children.

APPSC Group-I Main examination in August

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Public Service Commission will conduct the Main examination of Group I Services at Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Tirupati and Warangal from August 18. The examination notification was issued on November 21 last year, a press release issued by the commission said on Wednesday. The results of the Preliminary examination conducted on March 28 this year would be announced in "due course".

According to another release, the recruitment to junior lecturer posts would be held on July 25 at five notified centres. The examination would consist of two papers in the forenoon and afternoon on the same day.

Gautham Kumar takes charge as RTC MD

HYDERABAD: An Indian Police Service officer, P. Gautham Kumar, took over as Vice-Chairman and Managing Director of the State Road Transport Corporation, from A. Sivasankar.

While Mr. Gautham Kumar was earlier serving as Additional Director-General of Police (Training), Mr. Sivasankar has been made the Additional DGP (Railways).

Examination boycott call withdrawn

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Government Junior Lecturers' Association on Wednesday announced withdrawal of its call for boycott of the advanced supplementary examination 2004 after holding discussions with the Higher Education Minister, P. Venkateswara Rao, and the Principal Secretary, G. Sudhir.

A press release issued by B.Venkaiah, president, and M.V.Gona Reddy, general secretary, said the discussions led to the authorities agreeing to the release of promotion lists of junior lecturers and enhanced remuneration for all assignments pertaining to examination duties within a week.

Four electrocuted

KARIMNAGAR: Two persons were electrocuted and another sustained injuries when they came in contact with live wires at a poultry farm in Maghdoompur village of the Karimnagar mandal on Wednesday. According to the Karimnagar rural police, G Roopa (40) working as labourer in the Laxmi poultry farm came in contact with live wires while she was putting washed clothes on a wire. Immediately, another labourer working in the same farm, D Raju (50) rushed to the spot and tried to pull her out, but he also came in contact with live wires and both were electrocuted.

Raju's wife, Laxmi, who tried to separate them from the wires also sustained burns on her hand. However, Raju's brother-in-law switched off the power supply by disconnecting the wire. All the victims hailed from Madakam village of Indravelli mandal in Adilabad district.

A report from Nalgonda said two youngsters were electrocuted when they allegedly attempted to trespass into a mango orchard at Koretekal village on Tuesday.

Brahmin body plea to YSR

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Brahmin Samaikya Vedika on Wednesday appealed to the Chief Minister, Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, to accommodate in his Ministry two candidates from the Brahmin community to "correct the injustice". R.Balram Sharma, chairman, C.V.B.Krishna Murthy, president, and A. Satyanarayana Murthy, city organising secretary, in a statement recalled Dr. Reddy's promise before his swearing-in ceremony to ensure social justice by appointing Ministers from all communities.

Day temperatures rise; rain in some places

Hyderabad: Nandigama, Narsapur and Tirupati airport received a heavy rainfall of 7 cm each on Wednesday even as the South-West monsoon was trying to stabilise itself in the State.

The other chief amounts of rainfall for the day were: Nalgonda 4 cm, Machilipatnam, Mahabubnagar, Kaikalur, Palair Bridge, Madhira, Yellandu, Puttur 2 cm each, and Ramagundam, Bhimadole, Koderu, Bhongir, Dowlaiswaram, Paderu, Pattikonda, Piduguralla, Repalle and Salur each 1 cm.

Day temperatures rose at a few places in north coastal Andhra and they changed little in North Telangana. The State's maximum during the 24 hours ending this morning was 40 degrees C and it was accounted by Adilabad.

According to a forecast issued by the State Met Office valid for Thursday, there will be light to moderate rains at many places in Coastal Andhra and at a few places in the other two regions.

RPF sports meet begins

TIRUPATI: The sixth South Central zonal-level Railway Protection Force Duty Meet-2004 began on Wednesday at the Sri Venkateswara University stadium here. The meet was declared open by the Guntakal Divisional Railway Manager, V. Carmelus. Sportspersons from Vijayawada, Guntakal, Nanded, Secunderabad, Hyderabad, Guntur and SCR headquarters took part in a march past and later in the athletics and sports events.

Workers' strike

HYDERABAD: Workers of ITW Signode India's at Medak unit went on strike on Tuesday as the management refused to pay full arrears and also turned down a few other demands, the president of the workers' union, T.S. Rama Rao, has said in a press release.

SPMVVCET on June 13 TIRUPATI: SPMVVCET-2004, the common entrance test conducted by Sri Padmavathi Mahila Viswa Vidyalayam for admission into M.Sc. Biotechnology, M.Sc. Applied Microbiology and M.Sc Biochemistry courses, will be held on June 13 (Sunday) at 11.30 am. The test will be held at SPMVV, Tirupati; A.V. College of Arts, Sciences and Commerce, (near Liberty theatre), Hyderabad; Montessori Mahila Kalasala, Vijayawada and Pydah Degree College, Visakhapatnam.

Workshop on medicinal plants

KARIMNAGAR: The Department of Horticulture, Karimnagar, is organising a workshop on cultivation of medicinal and aromatic plants at Swashakthi Mahila College premises in Karimnagar town on June 15. Interested farmers can register their particulars by phone or in person at the office of the AD (Horticulture), agriculture market committee premises, Karimnagar.
