HYDERABAD, JUNE 9 . Cloud-seeding operations for artificial rain will begin on July 1 and cover 10 rain-shadow districts, including the entire Rayalaseema region. The rainfall from the fresh bid, regarded as a long-term drought-mitigation measure, is expected to be "definite and much more" as it coincides with the onset of the South-West monsoon. The 10 districts selected for the operation are Anantapur, Kurnool, Cuddapah, Chittoor, Nellore, Prakasam, Mahabubnagar, Guntur, Nalgonda and Ranga Reddy. Initially, the operations will continue until October 31. This time, two aircraft will be deployed, with the radar installed at Nandyal. With a view to removing misapprehensions among the public, the Commissioner for Disaster Management, Asutosh Mishra, who heads the mission, said the seeding "will only enhance the rainfall when there are clouds and will not create rain if there are no clouds." The enhancement would be about 10 to 20 per cent, he added. The Government has floated global tenders and wants to open the bids on June 22 with the help of a seven-member committee headed by Mr. Mishra. The idea is not to lose time as had happened last year when the operation commenced only on September 18.
