TIRUNELVELI, JUNE 9. Terming an `eyewash' the State Government's decision to open cells in Collectorates to enrol new eligible voters, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has urged it to open special cells in all taluk headquarters. For, "the names of several lakhs of voters have been deleted from the rolls in every district''. People in rural areas can easily reach taluk offices, the State secretary, N. Varadarajan, told reporters at the end of the party's three-day State committee meeting at Courtallam today. He said the government should make special arrangements and depute more personnel to receive applications for new family cards. On the Cauvery dispute, Mr. Varadarajan said the MPs of the Democratic Progressive Alliance made a sincere effort, having met the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh. They would meet the Karnataka Chief Minister, Dharam Singh, tomorrow. "Since this serious issue is twinned with the life of the over one-crore population in the delta region, the Cauvery River Authority should direct the Karnataka Government to honour the agreement on sharing of water during a distress period. Instead of taking positive steps to get the State's due share of water, the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister is indulging in a war of words." In view of drought all loans taken by farmers should be waived in full, so that they could avail themselves of fresh loans for farming in the coming season. Elections should he held to all cooperative societies, he said. Mr. Varadarajan said CENVAT, which had ``paralysed'' the textile industry, should be abolished in the very first budget of the United Progressive Alliance Government. The removal of this ``controversial tax'' would be the theme of the CPI (M)'s State conference to be held in Erode in the first week of July. He appreciated the Union Government for including repeal of the Prevention of Terrorism Act and according of the classical status to Tamil in the common minimum programme of the UPA, he said. Another resolution asked the State Government to withdraw the Tamil Nadu Essential Services Maintenance Act.
