CHENNAI, JUNE 9. The Consul-General of the United States in south India, Richard D. Haynes, handed over the `corporate citizen award' instituted by the Rotary Club of Ambattur to P.S. Jayaram, managing director, Chemplast Sanmar, here yesterday. Chemplast Sanmar, flagship company of the Sanmar group, was chosen for its "outstanding record of managerial excellence in a dynamic business environment, exemplary leadership in fostering the appropriate organisational culture" and "adherence to ethical business practices and corporate governance." The citation described the company as a "role model for other corporate organisations" and said the award recognised the corporate ethos of the company "in serving the community with a well-defined charter of social responsibility, contributing to the wholesome growth of institutions playing significant roles in health and medicine, education, rehabilitation of the unfortunate, homes for the deprived and downtrodden in society." Sudha Umashankar, president, Rotary Club of Ambattur; S.S. Badrinath, chairman, Medical Research Foundation; Sv.Rm. Ramanathan, Rotary 3230 District Governor; Rekha Shetty, past Rotary District Governor; and V. Narayanan, former chairman, Goodyear India, were among those who highlighted the need for corporates adhering to the highest ethical standards. Chempast, they said, showed the way. D. Seshadri, chairman, awards committee, detailed the selection process. G.V.R.S. Sarma, director, Vocational Service, read out the citation. In his acceptance speech, Mr. Jayaram said it was the individual and collective efforts of all employees that won the company the award.
