Andhra Loyola College plans to organise a seminar on `emotional intelligence' for its staff on Friday. College authorities feel that the education pattern for the youth should be shifted from the `world of school' to the `world of work and life' to meet the present-day needs. That the present education system hardly gives any guarantee for a successful life is strongly felt by the management, which has realised that education is not mere acquisition of bookish knowledge but is, in fact, a healthy interaction between the teacher and the pupil, understanding and handling their emotions in the right manner, at the right time and in the right way. "The minds of students, who come here from various walks of life, are sometimes preoccupied with problems back home. We want to equip our teachers with `emotional intelligence' to efficiently handle such students in the class,'' C. Peter Raj, college Principal, told The Hindu here on Wednesday. Joe Arun, who has done his Doctorate from Oxford University, would address the one-day seminar, Mr. Peter Raj said. Emotional intelligence comprises components like self-awareness, managing emotion, motivating oneself, empathy and handling relationships. Emotional intelligence, according to psychologists, is more powerful than intelligence quotient (IQ). If IQ defines how smart a person is, emotional intelligence defines how best he can make use of his smartness. "It is necessary for leaders, supervisors, managers or any other working section to understand their emotions and act accordingly at their respective work place. We thus found it apt to host a seminar on these lines,'' Mr. Peter Raj explained.
