Kollam
By Our Staff Reporter
KOLLAM, JUNE 9. The fishing boat operators on Kollam will observe an indefinite fast from June 11, demanding a ban on all unlicensed mechanised traditional crafts. The fast, to be held in front of the Shakthikulangara harbour, will be held under the banner of Kollam District Fishing Boat Operators Association. The general secretary of the association, M.S. James, told The Hindu that some of the so-called traditional crafts were having high-power inboard engines and that they used nets that had been banned. He said that it was the mode of fishing employed by such crafts that was depleting marine wealth. These crafts were engaged in trawling and not in traditional fishing. A ban on mechanised boats alone without banning such mechanised traditional crafts would not serve any purpose, Mr. James said. The boat owners are also going ahead with their plan to defy the trawling ban that comes into force from the midnight of June 14. Mr. James said that boats from all over the State would be brought to the Shakthikulangara harbour, sail from there into the sea and engage in trawling.
