Contractors seek arrears from Government

PATHANAMTHITTA, JUNE 9. The Kerala Government Contractors' Federation (KGCF) has called upon the Government to take immediate steps to redress the grievances of the small-scale contractors.

Addressing a press conference here today, the KGCF State general secretary, P. Nagaratnan, alleged that the Government delay in clearing the arrears of the small-scale contractors had made their lives miserable.

According to him, not less than ten small-scale contractors committed suicide owing to financial crisis.

Mr. Nagaratnan said that anti-socials unleashing terror at the work sites was another major problem faced by the small-scale contractors in the State. Two weeks back, a contractor, who is State secretary of the federation, was attacked at a work site in Konni.

The police had failed to act effectively against the culprits, he added.

The KGCF leader demanded that the Government give small-scale contractors exemption from Sales Tax registration.

Mr. Nagaratnan called for inclusion of the contract work of the Kerala Water Authority in the civil works category and for revision of the schedule rates of the Public Works Department.

He sought clearing of the arrears without further delay.

The contractors would stage a march to the Chief Minister's office in Thiruvananthapuram to press their demands on June 23, Mr. Nagaratnan said.
