Banks told to simplify loan procedures

By Our Staff Correspondent

CHITRADURGA, JUNE 9. The Deputy Commissioner, M.A. Sadiq, in a meeting with bank officers on Wednesday, asked the banks to simplify the procedure in sanctioning loans to small and marginal farmers through kisan cards.

He pointed out that of the 3.71 lakh eligible farmers in the district, kisan cards had been issued only to 23,000 farmers. A minimum target to issue the cards should be fixed and a loan of Rs. 25,000 should be sanctioned without asking for anything other than the Rights of Records certificate, tax payment receipt and no dues certificate, he said.

Mr. Sadiq asked farmers to contact the banks in their areas to get the cards within 15 days. He also asked the banks and the Agriculture Department to publicise welfare programmes.

He asked the banks to cooperate in the implementation of watershed development programmes. Each bank should take up a pilot project through local self-help groups, he suggested.

He directed banks to adopt a taluk for intensive development of micro-watershed programmes.

He assigned Hosadurga and Molkalmuru taluks to the gramina banks of the respective taluks, Hiriyur to Vijaya Bank, Chitradurga to Canara Bank, Holalkere to State Bank of Mysore, and Challakere taluk to Central Cooperative Bank.

Krishna Murthy, who is involved in the implementation of the watershed project, said that 305 micro-watersheds had been constructed in the district.

He also said that 200 hectares of land had to be identified for the construction of check dams, canal bunds, sink pits, and planting of trees with active involvement from self-help groups.

The chairman of Gramina Bank, Narasa Reddy; the Chief Executive Officer of the Zilla Panchayat, Narayana Swamy; and the Lead Bank Manager, Poorvimutt, attended the meeting.
