MacGill ignored
SYDNEY,
JUNE 9.
Leg-spinner Stuart MacGill, who pulled out of the Zimbabwe tour on moral grounds, was ignored by the selectors who named a 13-member squad for the two-Test home series against Sri Lanka next month.
MacGill's replacement Cameron White was left out of the squad in favour of paceman Shaun Tait, meaning the squad would have just one specialist spinner in Shane Warne plus five pacemen, including Glenn McGrath who has been sidelined for the past one year.
Speedster Brad Williams was included in the squad subject to his recovery from a back injury which cut short his Zimbabwe tour. White was the only player not retained from the abandoned Test tour of Zimbabwe.
Defending the decision to pack the squad with fast bowlers, the selection panel chairman, Trevor Hohns, said, ``considering the type of wickets we're likely to get in Darwin and Cairns, it was highly unlikely that we'd play two spinners, which ruled out both Cameron White and Stuart MacGill.
The squad: Ricky Ponting (capt.), Adam Gilchrist, Justin Langer, Matthew Hayden, Damien Martyn, Darren Lehmann, Simon Katich, Shane Warne, Jason Gillespie, Michael Kasprowicz, Glenn McGrath, Brad Williams and Shaun Tait. PTI
