State under-17 chess tournament from today

RAJAPALAYAM, JUNE 9. The 15th Shri. T. P. Textiles Tamil Nadu State under-17 chess championship for N. R. Krishnamma Raja Memorial shield (boys) and Arasan Fire Works Trophy (girls), conducted by the Virduhunagar District Chess Association, will begin at the Kamarajar Kalyana Mandapam here on Thursday.

Nearly 30 boys and 19 girls are in fray. While 13 boys are FIDE rated, nine girls are FIDE rated.

In the boys section, Haribabu of NASA Academy Chennai, a National `B' player with a FIDE rating of 2132, Uttam Sharma of Thiruvalluvar, former State junior (U-19) champion with a FIDE rating of 2083 and other promising players — D. Krishna (2111), Nirmal Chandan (2108) — will be the contenders for the title.

In the girls section, Sivasankari (FIDE rating 2088), state sub-junior champion from Thiruvalluvar, Ishwarya (2077), P. K. Jai Shree (2045) and Mahima Raj Mohan (2016) of Madurai, a former under-19 National champion, will be the contenders for the title.

The total prize money involved is Rs.15,500.
