PALAKKAD, JUNE 9. The Congress leader and former MLA P. Balan who died at a private hospital in Coimbatore on Tuesday was cremated at the electric crematorium in Chandranagar on Wednesday afternoon with full State honours. The Chief Minister, A.K. Antony, his Cabinet colleagues, leaders of various political parties and a large number of people were present on the occasion. The body of Balan, known for his Gandhian principles and political integrity, was brought from Coimbatore to his residence at Thachanpara, Mannarkkad, on Tuesday. The body was placed at the District Congress Committee (DCC) office, Jawahar Bhavan, at 11-30 a.m. today. Mr. Antony placed a wreath of flowers on the body on behalf of the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, then. The KPCC acting president, P.P. Thankachan, placed a wreath on behalf of the All India Congress Committee general secretary in charge of Kerala, Ahmed Patel. The Finance Minister, K. Sankaranarayanan, and his Cabinet colleagues also paid homage to the departed leader at the DCC office.
