THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, JUNE 9. The Revenue Minister, K.M. Mani, has directed the District Collectors to rush financial assistance to the victims of monsoon havoc without any delay. Talking to press persons after a conference of the Collectors here today, the Minister said compensation to those who had lost houses would be paid the same day or the next day. Urgent steps would be taken to assess damage from landslips and pay compensation. Mr. Mani said the Collectors had been told to identify shelter homes in advance so that people affected or under threat of landslips or other calamities could be shifted without any delay. He said that as many as 44 persons had been killed in monsoon-related incidents after the onset of rains this year. Three were missing. The injured numbered 56. As many as 400 houses were destroyed and 7742 houses were damaged. Eight landslips had occurred during the period. He said that seven relief camps were now functioning in the State, sheltering 137 families. Of these, four were in Thrissur district. A relief camp each functioned in Kollam, Ernakulam and Kannur districts. He said that Rs. 110 crores had been released so far for laying of pipelines for drinking water supply. Rs. 50,000 was being paid to the next of kin of those dying in natural calamities. For loss of houses, Rs. 15,000 each was being paid. In case of partial damage to houses, up to Rs. 10,000 was being paid, he said.
