Bringing jobs within easy reach

EMPLOYERS LOOKING for the right talent often have a grouse: "We have several vacancies at almost every level, but we just can't find candidates who are knowledgeable and efficient enough for those jobs!"

In any company that is doing well, there is often no time to teach new employees what exactly needs to be done, and how to go about doing it. If new recruits are able to catch on immediately and get productive without wasting time, everyone is much relieved.

Representatives of polytechnic colleges in Tamil Nadu, who met to debate the subject and draw up a proposal for vocational education, did a lot of thinking on these issues at a seminar organised by the NIA Educational Institutions at Pollachi, a couple of days ago.

The Director of School Education, Government of Tamil Nadu, S. Paramasivan, said that the accent should be on developing the skills of students and making it easy for them to find employment.

The Chairman of the NIA Educational Institutions, N. Mahalingam, said that in engineering education, there ought to be six months of theory and six months of practical training.

He suggested that vocational higher secondary schools could be started in every polytechnic college in Tamil Nadu, and trade education based on "regional needs and available resources" introduced.
