PERAMBALUR, JUNE 9 . The State Government has promoted the Cashew Growers Industrial Cooperative Society to protect cashew farmers, according to the Collector, D. Vivekanandan. In a statement issued here today, he said that the Government had launched this society last year with the main objective of helping the cashew farmers. It was planned to enrol 100 cashew farmers as members at a capital outlay of Rs. 6 lakhs. So far, 29 cashew farmers enrolled as members of the Thanthai Periyar Cashew Growers Industrial Cooperative Society by paying Rs. 6,000 each. Another 71 members should be enrolled with the society for securing the Government share and loan from the bank. The Government had planned to start a cashew factory under the auspices of the society by contributing Rs. 3 lakhs as its share and fetching Rs. 7.78 lakhs as loan from banks. The launch of a cashew-processing unit would enable traders to procure cashew at reasonable price straightaway from the farmers and market the same. The farmers interested in knowing more about the society can contact either the General Manager, District Industries Centre, 14. Rajaji Nagar, Second Cross Street, Ariyalur (phone No. 954329 220004) or the Assistant Director, Industrial Cooperatives, 14. Reynolds Road, Cantonment, Tiruchi (phone No. 95431 2461931).
