Mysore-K.R. Nagar heritage ride on Sunday

By Our Staff Correspondent

MYSORE, JUNE 9. A steam locomotive service will be operated from Mysore to K.R. Nagar on June 13 and 20.

Disclosing this to presspersons here today, the Divisional Railway Manager, Usha Mathur, said the Railways would operate two trips each on June 13 and 14. The return journey ticket would cost Rs. 50, while a one-way trip would cost Rs. 30. Tickets were being issued for the heritage ride at the Mysore City Railway Station. However, only 500 tickets would be sold for each trip. The Indian Overseas Bank had agreed to sponsor 200 tickets for children and the Railways was keen on allotting them to underprivileged children or those with disabilities.

The heritage ride was being organised as part of the silver jubilee celebrations of the Mysore Rail Museum. The division had brought a broad gauge steam locomotive from the Rewari locomotive shed in Haryana to mark the event held on June 2. The 1943 vintage classic would be run between Mysore and K.R. Nagar, she said.

The first trip will be flagged off at 11.30 a.m., while the second will commence at 3 p.m. The authorities will make arrangements for snacks for passengers, and a souvenir counter will be opened at the K.R. Nagar Railway Station.

Ms. Mathur said only second class coaches would be run as the weather conditions obviated the need for an air-conditioned service. Though the steam locomotive service to K.R. Nagar was being organised to mark the silver jubilee of the museum in Mysore, it also coincided with the 70th anniversary of the renaming of the erstwhile Yedathore as Krishnaraja Nagar.

She said that a trip to K.R. Nagar needed three tonnes of coal, which would cost Rs. 45,000.

Hence, the authorities had not taken a decision on continuing the heritage ride. "Everything depends on the patronage received by the public,'' she added.
