MANGALORE,

The Deputy Commissioner, Arvind Shrivastav, told presspersons here on Wednesday that the district administration had made necessary <149>arrangements to take up relief work in case of any emergency.
A micro <149>plan had been prepared to face any eventuality, he said and added that people living in flood-prone areas need not panic in case of flash floods as the authorities would rush to their rescue.
While Bantwal taluk had 50 flood-prone areas, Mangalore taluk had 41, he said. Eighteen areas in Belthangady taluk were flood prone while the corresponding number at Puttur and Sullia were five and three, respectively, he added.
Mr. Shrivastav said the district received 841.7 mm rainfall in 2004 up to June 8 as against the 103.7 mm rainfall recorded during the corresponding period the previous year. Hence, there was an eight-fold increase in the quantum of rainfall received by the district this year. He said the administration had identified 148 swimmers to seek their service during any emergency. Of them, 92 were in Mangalore taluk, 20 in Belthangady, and 16 in Bantwal taluk.
Also, 77 boat owners had been identified to use their boats for relief works. Of them, 60 were in Mangalore taluk, he said. As many as 56 spots had been identified to set up gruel centres, of which 41 were in Mangalore and seven in Bantwal.
He said a notice had been issued to port users about the closure of ports from May 16 and "floating signals" had been removed from May 30. Steps had been taken to hoist signals according to the forecast from the Meteorological Department, Chennai. Residents in low-lying areas had been told to shift to safe places in case of floods and sea erosion, he said.
Deaths
Mr. Shrivastav said eight rain-related deaths had been reported in the district so far. Of them, six deaths had taken place in Mangalore and the remaining in Belthangady taluk.
He said the water level at the Nethravathi stood at 2.5 metres as against the danger level of 8.5 metres. The water level at the Kumaradhara at Uppinangady was hovering at 20.5 metres as against the danger level of 26.5 metres.
The Superintendent of Police, Pankaj Kumar Thakur, the District Commandant of the Home Guards, Shivaprasad Rai, and the Assistant Commissioner, Prabhakar Sharma, were present.
