Varsity yet to notify colleges on semester system

By Our Staff Correspondent

MANGALORE, JUNE 9. Even as colleges under Mangalore University get ready to begin the first year degree classes on June 22, the university is yet to notify them about the implementation of the semester system.

"The admissions are over and the classes will begin soon. But the colleges are still clueless about what kind of system will be introduced for the first year students,'' says the secretary of the Federation of University Teachers Associations of Karnataka, A.M. Narahari.

He notes that neither the colleges nor the teachers' associations have received any intimation as to whether the semester scheme will be introduced this year or not.

The university has also not notified the colleges on details such as the examination pattern, the practical examination, and internals, among other things, he says. Though the semester system was proposed to give students a change in the education pattern, it does not solve the problems of teachers, he says. "The number of days spent on evaluation is 23 every year. If the colleges have to evaluate papers twice a year with the introduction of the semester system, 46 days will be spent on evaluation alone," he says.
