Police boost night patrolling

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, JUNE 9. In the wake of frequent burglaries reported over the last one week, the city police have constituted a special team under the control of a joint commissioner for intensifying night patrolling.

The 2,000-strong team, which came into force from Monday evening, includes 1,000 policemen apart from members of the Friends of Police, community police and Home Guards. There are 200 police officers in the rank of sub inspectors and two deputy commissioners assisting the patrol team on a regular basis during its night operations in the city. The joint commissioner who heads the team take turns every night. The team operates from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m.

According to a senior police official, the functioning of the patrol team is `target oriented,' which means the focus of the team will be on identifying ex-convicts and keeping tab on their movements. We have already questioned 300 ex-convicts in connection with the burglaries over the last one week alone, the official said.
