Vijayawada
By Our Special Correspondent
VIJAYAWADA, JUNE 9. After emerging victorious in a majority of constituencies it contested in alliance with the Congress, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has decided to hold two extended regional conventions during the third week of this month to take stock of the post- election scenario. The meetings, to be held in Vijayawada on June 15 and 16 and Hyderabad on June 20 and 21, will discuss issues facing the State and evolve future strategies. About 450 to 500 functionaries, including the party's senior leaders and the heads of frontal organisations of the coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema districts, and Khammam district, are expected to participate in the meeting to be held at Vijayawada. Leaders from the other districts will attend the meeting scheduled in Hyderabad. Senior party leaders said the exercise is aimed at analysing the situation at the State and Central levels. Various issues, including the implementation of the Common Minimum Programme of the United Progressive Alliance at the Centre and ways of explaining to the party cadre the crucial role played by the party in forging the national coalition would be discussed, they said. The meetings are also expected also take stock of the implementation of poll promises made by the Congress in the State, and finalise the party's attitude towards the Government. "Though we contested in alliance with the Congress, the CPI(M) needs its independence and seeks to play a demarcated role in ensuring that the promises made by the Congress are implemented effectively," a senior CPI(M) leader told The Hindu . Besides, given the aggressive stand taken by the CPI(M) in the past few years on various public issues, it has become imperative for the party's leaders to explain to its cadre the party's attitude towards the present Government. "People reposed confidence in the Congress-Left alliance with high aspirations. We should work for ensuring that these are fulfilled," the leaders said. The meetings, with maximum participation of party rank and file, would also discuss the tasks that lie ahead and decide on the future course of action to be adopted by the party.
