Life term for three

MADURAI, JUNE 9. Three persons were sentenced to life imprisonment by a fast track court here today.

According to the prosecution, Alagar of Alwarpuram and his associates burgled a house in 1996. A dispute broke out among them over sharing the booty. The gang members abducted Alagar in an autorickshaw and murdered him on October 26, 1996 near Silaiman.

`Police' Fakruddin, Sikkandar, Siddique, Rafiq Raja, Suresh, Alagar, Anandan, Sayabu and Dhanasekharan were cited as accused. The third fast track court judge, John Peter Sugumar, sentenced Sikkandar, Siddique and Rafiq Raja to life and imposed a fine of Rs. 1,500 on each. The rest were acquitted.

Couple sentenced

A couple was sentenced to life imprisonment by a city court today.

Balasekhar of Keelayur near Melur, his wife, Shanti, and son, Ganesh Babu, murdered Muthuraman of the same village following a dispute on April 5, 2001. The three hacked the victim to death.

The first fast track court judge, S. Udayan, also imposed a penalty of Rs. 5,000 on each. Ganesh Babu, a minor, was referred to the juvenile home.
