Mentally retarded man ends life

BANGALORE, JUNE 9. A mentally retarded man committed suicide by slitting his neck with a knife near the City Market, the police said.

They gave the name of the person as Saleem (40). The victim was being taken care of by his mother, Sahina Begum (65). The police said Saleem ate the food served by his mother and went to sleep on Tuesday night and on Wednesday morning his mother found him dead. Saleem had been suffering from a mental disease for six years, the police added.

House burgled

Burglars took away gold and other valuables worth Rs. 65,000 and Rs. 4,000 in cash from a house of a software engineer on Wheelers Road in Frazer Town police station limits on Monday.

According to a complaint given by Benu Thomas, the software engineer, and his wife, Deepa Susan, a teacher, they had locked the house on Monday morning. When they returned home from work in the evening they noticed the lock of the front door broken and the house ransacked.

Workman dies

A workman cleaning a drainage pipeline died of suffocation in Kodihalli in Airport police station limits on Tuesday.

The police gave the name of the victim as Tirumala (21). He and his colleague, Srikante Gowda, who were engaged in the cleaning work, got stuck in the pipeline. While Tirumala died of suffocation, Srikante Gowda managed to come out. He is being treated in a hospital.

Eight arrested

The City police on Wednesday arrested eight persons for two offences.

The Frazer Town police arrested four persons on charges of allegedly stealing gas cylinders fixed to autorickshaws and cars. They recovered 40 gas cylinders worth Rs. 75,000.

The arrested persons are Siddik (33) of Govindapur, Mohammed Rafiq (26), Naveed Ahmed (28), and Ayub (23), all from K.G. Halli. The accused were removing the gas cylinders by parking their autorickshaws by the side of the vehicles fitted with gas kits and pretending to be carrying out repairs.

The Banashankari police arrested four persons allegedly involved in house break-in and theft and recovered gold and silver articles, electronic goods, and a two-wheeler, all worth Rs. 1.1 lakh.

The names of the arrested persons were given as Balaraj (16) of Avalahalli, Somashekar (14), and Murali (14), both from Sarabandepalya, and Narayana (18) of Ambedkar Nagar. They were said to be involved in two theft cases at Jayanagar and J.P. Nagar here.
