PALAKKAD, JUNE 10. The Leader of the Opposition, V.S. Achuthanandan, has demanded that the State Government withdraw its decision to halve the rent on revenue lease land. Addressing a press conference here today, Mr. Achuthanandan alleged that the decision was aimed to help the big plantation owners and the institutions that hold thousands of acres of Government land with them. It would deprive the State exchequer of Rs.200 crores as dues. The Revenue Minister, K.M. Mani, had not only slashed the lease rent by more than half but also waived the arrears of rent amounting to Rs.200 crores from major institutions, both in the public and private sector, he said. After the Land Reforms Act was implemented in the State there were no farmers who had to give lease rent for their land holding. So, the Government decision to slash the lease rent was not to help the small farmers but only the rich plantation owners, he said.
