Probe into Kargil document issue planned

NEW DELHI,
JUNE 10.
The authorities are contemplating a probe into the issue of the former Defence Minister, George Fernandes, displaying in public an internal report of the Army on the Kargil conflict, which they claimed is a classified secret document.
The Defence Minister, Pranab Mukherjee, had taken strong exception to Mr. Fernandes using the report to buttress his point to presspersons. Official sources wondered how a Minister could get hold of classified papers after the announcement of general elections and a directive from the Cabinet Secretary that no fresh document be shown to any Minister.
Mr. Mukherjee had said that the report was not a ``souvenir.'' It was a classified document that should have been returned once Mr. Fernandes ceased to be a Minister.
