YSR for correction of imbalance in Government service

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, JUNE 10. T he Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, on Thursday said it was unfortunate that several people were continuing in Government service well past the age of retirement.

He was speaking to presspersons after laying the foundation for a Rs. 1.5 crore, `Transport Bhavan' in the Road Transport Authority's (RTA) Central Office in Somajiguda here. The Information Minister, Mohd. Ali Shabbir, and Khairatabad MLA, P. Janardhana Reddy, were present. Dr. Reddy said he had been getting several petitions that despite having officially retired, a lot many people were still continuing in office. Considering the rate of unemployment and the disillusionment among youth, he said this phenomenon requires correction.

"Even people above 70 years of age are still heading Government organisations. While affecting career prospects of other regular and younger employees, it is also causing a lot of heartburn," he said.

Dr. Reddy said the Transport Department was an agency with the maximum public contact and it was imperative for every operation to be `transparent.' They would make systems simple and the officials accessible, he said, adding that it is being continuously drilled into the minds of officials that their actions should reflect the Government's people-friendly policies and also lessen the burden on the common man.

After the Chief Minister left, Mr. P. Janardhan Reddy lodged a complaint with the Transport Commissioner, C.R. Biswal, protesting over the way the Khairatabad corporator, G. Krishna's name had been omitted in the invitation. He said that earlier too, when the Telugu Desam was in power, such instances had taken place. It was regrettable that this should continue.

The four-storeyed structure will be ready by January and have 30,000 square feet of space and house the offices of the Transport Commissioner and other officials. Also, the Central Server of the department will be located there with a view to improve connectivity, Mr. Biswal said. On revenue collections, he said the department had collected Rs. 1,052 crores against a target of Rs. 958 crores in the financial year 2003-04. For 2004-2005, the target had been fixed at Rs. 1,250 crores, he said.

Also present at the foundation stone-laying ceremony were the Secretary (Transport), Neelam Sawhney, Hyderabad Collector, M. Veerabhadraiah, Additional Transport Commissioner, V. Malyadri, Joint Commissioners, Krishna Reddy, C.L.N. Gandhi and N.V. Subba Rao, and Deputy Commissioner, Srinivas.
