Land acquisition for Devadula by August 18

By Our Staff Reporter

WARANGAL, JUNE 10. Land acquisition for the much-awaited Godavari Lift Irrigation Scheme (Devadula) project will be complete by August 18. The State Government has earmarked Rs. 11 crores for the purpose, the Major Irrigation Minister, Ponnala Lakshmaiah, has said.

Addressing a press conference after a review meeting at the Collectorate here on Thursday, Mr. Lakshmaiah said the project required a total of 900 acres. Over 600 acres would be acquired this month and the rest by August 18. "Most of the projects are pending due to land acquisition problems. We have directed the officials to come up with an action plan for each project and set a deadline for completing the task before the actual works are grounded," he said.

Asked whether the project was viable as they opposed the project while in the opposition, the Minister said they only criticised the then Government for not keeping up its promise of completing the project within the stipulated 18 months. Experts would study the technical aspects of the project before grounding the works, he added.

Mr. Lakshmaiah said plans were afoot to bring under cultivation 1.13-lakh acres under the SRSP stage II in the district before the next kharif season. The detailed plans for the purpose would be prepared within two days by the engineers. "The Government has categorically stated that it will accord top priority to the irrigation sector and is moving in that direction," he asserted.

Asked how the Government was planning to raise the required Rs. 25,000 crores for completing the pending projects, the Minister said they were confident of raising funds from various sources such as international funding agencies and floating bonds through Irrigation Development Corporation among others.

"The Government is planning to allocate Rs. 4,600 crores annually for irrigation. Within five years, we will be spending about Rs. 23,000 crores from the State budget. We are confident of spending the amount required," he said.
