Five arrested in murder case

By Our Staff Reporter

TIRUPATI, JUNE 10. The Alipiri police have arrested five persons in the Jeevakona murder case, in which a youth was killed on a hillock on the Tirumala ranges for gain. Investigation led the police to the victim's friends, who reportedly admitted to have killed him for Rs. 20,000.

The Superintendent of Police, M. V. Ramachandra Raju, who addressed a media conference here on Thursday, termed it one of the best scientifically-investigated cases in the district.

The SP said K. Harikrishna (27), a native of K.S.Agraharam in Chitvel mandal of Cuddapah district, was working in a cool drinks shop in Tirumala. With the TTD deciding to remove the shop as part of its eviction programme, Harikrishna was allotted a shop downhill, along with his owner. He got Rs.20,000 from his village for purchasing a soda-maker for the shop.

Knowing this, his friend, Sriramulu, and Venkatesh, a hawker, allegedly telephoned him on June 1 to come down to Tirupati with cash to buy the machine. When Harikrishna went to them, he was taken to Jeevakona by the two, and their friends, the SP said. There they allegedly strangled him, brought the body to the Rallakona forest, threw it into a trench and set it afire after dousing it with petrol.

The SP said as the news of an unidentified burnt body being found spread, the Alipiri police got postmortem performed on the body.

By collating the features of missing persons and the corpse, the investigators suspected that the body could be Harikrishna's. Interestingly, the victim's sixth finger made their job easier.

The hints provided by the victim's relatives led the police to his friends. At this time, a nervous Sriramulu spilt the beans and he was arrested on Wednesday. On the information given by him, four others - Prasad, Jagadish, Ramesh and Nagabhushanam - were arrested in the early hours of Thursday while Venkatesh was at large.

Presenting all the arrested before the media, Mr. Raju said the amount, which led to the murder, and the victim's wrist watch and a ring were recovered.
