Nod for Sky City project

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM JUNE 10. The Government has approved in principle the flyover project by name Sky City to be implemented in Kochi at a cost of Rs. 896 crores. The Local Administration Minister, Cherkalam Abdulla, announced after discussions on the project today that the project involved the construction of an 8.5 km long flyover from the Cochin Shipyard to the Edapally Bypass. It would be implemented by the Yeshoram Builders without any financial commitment by the Government. He asked the agency to submit the detailed feasibility and project reports. The Mayor of Kochi, C. M. Dinesh Mani, the Additional Chief Secretary, Babu Jacob, the Secretary of Kochi Corporation, C. E. Basheer and the MD of Yeshoram Builders, Vadhyar, were among those who participated in the discussions.

Vedi protests

The Hindu Aikya Vedi has protested against the Cabinet's decision not to refer the Marad issue to the CBI. J. Sisupalan, president and Kummanam Rajasekharan, general secretary of the organisation, in a statement today described it as treachery of the worst kind. They said that it was tantamount to open surrender by the Government to fundamentalist forces.

Textbooks: action sought

The BJP State Secretary, K. Raman Pillai, on Thursday demanded stringent action against those responsible for delays in printing of school text books.

The BJP leader said that printing of textbooks was not over even though the academic year had begun. This amounted to serious dereliction of duty.

Mr. Pillai said that steps should be taken to distribute the textbooks at the earliest.

College lecturers plan strike

College lecturers, under the banner of the Association of Kerala Government Teachers(AKGCT) will go on token strike on June 17, protest against the Government's move to effect changes in the special rules regarding the appointment of principals in government colleges. A press note issued here said that in every other department seniority in service was the criterion for promotion. An exception cannot be allowed in the case of college teachers. Certain officials in the department of education are acting as the puppets of the private lobby in the higher education sector. The Education Minister was not doing anything to rein in these forces, the pressnote added.

Plea to abandon project

The Gandhi Samarak Nidhi has asked the Government not to implement the proposed Pathrakadavu hydel project. In a statement today it warned that the project would do as much harm to the biodiversity rich Silent Valley as the original project would have.

25 panchayats oppose project

PALAKKAD JUNE 10. A meeting of the representatives of 25 grama panchayats in Palakkad and Malappuram districts, that use the waters of Kunthi and Thuthapuzha rivers, in a meeting held at Cherpulassery today opposed the move to construct the Pathrakadavu hydro electric project across the Kunthi river in the Silent Valley forest area. The organiser of today's meeting, K.T. Sathyan, president of Cherpulassery grama panchayat told The Hindu that these panchayats depend on the Kunthi and the Thuthapuzha rivers for their drinking and irrigation needs

Flight diverted

Kochi June 10. The Indian Airlines Bahrain-Doha-Kozhikode-Kochi flight (IC 998) skipped Kozhikode and landed at Kochi airport due to bad weather. Later, the flight, carrying 125 passengers, left for Kozhikode. The flight returned from Kozhikode at 12.40 p.m. Due to this delay, IA's Mumbai-Delhi service, which was to be operated by the very same flight, also got delayed. This service, which was scheduled for 10-30 a.m. was delayed by almost three hours.

New school opened

KOLLAM June 10. The president of the Kollurvila Muslim Jam-ath Committee, A. Yunus Kunju, inaugurated the KMJ Central School on Wednesday. The school is located at Vadakevila in the city. The school has a play school, UKG and LKG classes to start with. In the coming years the school will have facilities to study up to Plus Two level, the secretary of the committee said in a statement here.

Seminar on hospitals

The Gramsci Sthree Padana Kendram here is organising a seminar on `Are Government hospitals centres of harassment''. The seminar to be held at the Public Library Hall on June 15 will be inaugurated by the former director of the Nutrition Programme, C.R. Soman. Doctors, medical representatives and representatives of the Kerala Government Nurses Association among others will address the seminar.

Cheating case

PATHANAMTHITTA June 10. The Pathanamthitta police have registered a case against Mohammed Sheriff alias Shaji of Shamir Manzil at Anappara near here on charges of cheating. The complaint was filed by Muraleedhara Kurup of Ambalayam at Vallicaud near here, the Dy.SP, Gopalakrishna Pillai, said. Sheriff is the proprietor of NKR Chits (India) Private Limited with its headquarters in Jammu and corporate office in Pathanamthitta. There were reports that the financing company had been closed since June 7, the police said.

Hindustani concert

Thrissur June 10. The Thalam Cultural Trust will hold a Hindustani vocal recital by Gayathri Ashokan at the Sangeeta Nataka Akademi Theatre here on June 12. Winner of the State Award for the Best Playback Singer for 2003, Ms. Gayathri is a disciple of Pandit Vinayak Torvi of Bangalore, says a press release.

Youth found dead

KOZHIKODE JUNE 10. A youth was today found dead in a canal at Arikulam in Koilandi taluk near here. He has been identified as Vineesh (27), a newspaper boy. The Deputy Collector, Bhaskaran, visited his house and his kin were given Rs. 10,000 as part of relief measures.

Training programme

A few seats are vacant for the one-year teacher-training programme at the newly inaugurated Mythri Nursery Teacher Training Institute at Chalappuram here. Seats are reserved for the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes and Handicapped persons.
