`Awareness key to fighting respiratory diseases'

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, JUNE 10. Speakers at the celebrations of the third anniversary of the Respiratory Research Foundation of India (RRFI) here today stressed the importance of creating awareness of respiratory diseases among the public.

K.V.Thiruvengadam, patron, RRFI, said it was astonishing how much could be achieved by individual physicians in the area of respiratory diseases. Spreading awareness of the diseases and right methods of protecting oneself was very important.

Dr.Thiruvengadam congratulated the RRFI and its founder-chairman R.Narasimhan, on his selfless good work. Later, he distributed prizes to winners in competitions held by the RRFI and released the Foundation's e-bulletin.

Providing information to the public was to empower them, said Nalini Krishnan, medical director, The Hindu and project director, REACH. Though the country had tremendous medical resources, lack of awareness of what was available and inability to access the resources were the biggest problems. Only awareness creation would help to remedy the situation. Dr.Krishnan also commended the organisation for achieving a tremendous deal in a short span. She assured the RRFI that REACH would support it in its activities.

Since it was started three years ago to create awareness of respiratory diseases, the RRFI has held several camps, workshops and created a database on the diseases. Free camps were held and inhalers distributed free or at subsidised rates to the public, Dr.Narasimhan said.

K.C.Vijayan, RRFI board member, proposed a vote of thanks.
