Post offices to be made `one-stop shoppe'

CHENNAI, JUNE 10. T he Centre is committed to making post offices across the country a "one-stop shoppe" with better ambience to provide "all possible services, including payment of service industry bills". Talking to reporters after inaugurating a Rs.1.10-crore Thyagaraya Nagar (North) Post Office Complex at Vani Mahal here today, the Union Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Dayanidhi Maran, said that out of 629 post offices which were to be modernised, 59 would be in Tamil Nadu. "The United Progressive Alliance Government is committed to widening the scope of postal services and enabling transaction of more business," Mr.Maran said. Already Rs.70 crores was sanctioned by the Centre for undertaking computersation of post offices.

"We have requested the Centre for a further enhancement of Rs.30 crores to help to implement the computerisation projects in all post offices, especially those in rural areas." The Minister said efforts were on to create a permanent exhibition centre to popularise philately at the Anna Road Head Post Office. Mr. Maran unveiled a plaque to mark the inauguration of the building.

Anbalagan, DMK MLA, urged the Postal department to explore the feasibility of setting up a post office at Kodambakkam. Vijay Bhushan, Director-General and Secretary, Union Department of Posts, said the department was trying to "reach the unreached" rural areas to extend services available at urban centres.

Vatsala Raghu, Chief Postmaster-General, Tamil Nadu Circle, Chennai; and T. Panneerselvam, Postmaster-General, Chennai City Region, said the building had an area of 11,682 sqft. on a five-ground plot. The new complex would house the T.Nagar Post Office, the delivery office of Nungambakkam, Finance Mart of T-Nagar Head Post Office, divisional offices of Chennai City Central and South Division and Inspection Quarters.

In the Tamil Nadu Circle, 267 post offices functioned from departmental buildings and out of 92 head post offices, 74 from departmental buildings. Construction of buildings were on in seven places in the Tamil Nadu Circle covering Sathuvachery in Vellore, Dindigul, Redfield - Coimbatore, Dharmapuri, Manamadurai, Cuddalore Divisional Office, Anna Nagar, Madurai.
