VISAKHAPATNAM, JUNE 10. The District Tourism Development Council has decided to hand over the maintenance of the Kurupam monument on Beach Road to the Indian National Trust for Art, Culture and Heritage (INTACH). The decision comes in the wake of the demolition of the century-old heritage building near Grand Bay hotel overnight. The co-convener of the local chapter of INTACH, G. Srinivas Murthy, raised the issue at the DTDC meeting on Wednesday and expressed anguish that some builders had razed the beautiful structure in which the former President, Sarvepalli Radhakrishan, lived during his tenure as the Vice-Chancellor of Andhra University. The building, which was declared a historic monument, needs to be restored, he said. The district Collector, Sunil Sharma, who chaired the meeting, said that while taking up important projects, care would be taken to ensure that they were devoid of problems. Funds would be sanctioned for developing the tourism project on Kambala Konda, he said.
Visakha Utsav
The DTDC also decided to organise the Visakha Utsav from December 22 to 25 this year. Another decision taken at the meeting was that the maintenance staff for the `Jatara' project in Madhurawada should be engaged on contract basis.
