Industrial growth up 9.4 p.c. in April

NEW DELHI, JUNE 11. Indian industry has notched an impressive growth of 9.4 per cent in the first month of the current fiscal. The performance in April outpaces the 4.2 per cent growth recorded in April 2003 and 4.1 per cent in April 2002. The high growth performance has been across all sectors with mining recording a 9.5 per cent increase in April, up from 6.3 in the same month last year.

Manufacturing too was high at 9.2 per cent against 4.3 per cent while electricity generation was at a record high of 10.7 against a mere 1.9 per cent.

Use-based data released by the Central Statistical Organisation show that basic goods production was higher by 8.2 per cent against 2.8 per cent growth in April last year, capital goods by a huge 23.2 per cent against 6.5 per cent and intermediate goods by 9.4 per cent against 2.1 per cent. Consumer goods production was higher by 6.7 per cent against a 7.1 per cent growth with consumer durables recording a 17.7 per cent increase against a 0.4 per cent increase and consumer non-durables by 3.5 per cent against 9.1 per cent.

In the two-digit industry segment, 14 out of the 17 sectors reported positive growth in April. The highest growth of 88 per cent was in the case of wool, silk and man-made fibre textiles, followed by 24.9 per cent in the case of basic chemicals and chemical products (except products of petroleum and coal) and 24.4 per cent in machinery and equipment other than transport equipment.

On the other hand, food products have shown a dip of 21.9 per cent, followed by a 9.7 per cent decline in case of wood and wood products.
