Cabinet berth sought for Shivashankarappa

By Our Staff Correspondent

DAVANGERE, JUNE 11. The Congress members of the Davangere Zilla Panchayat and the Congress councillors of the Davangere City Municipal Council (CMC) have threatened to resign from the two bodies if the Dharam Singh-led coalition Government fails to accommodate Shyamanur Shivashankarappa in the State Cabinet in the next Cabinet expansion.

The President of the Davangere CMC, R.H. Naghabhushan; the President of the zilla panchayat, Anaberu Paravathamma; the chairman of the Standing Committee, Mahabaleshwara Gowda; a leader of the State Youth Congress, Dinesh K. Shetty; and a senior councillor, D. Basavaraj, announced that all the Congress members would resign if the Government failed to include Mr. Shivashankarappa in the Cabinet.

They have sent a letter to the party High Command and requested that Mr. Shivashankarappa be included in the Cabinet as he has been a "loyal and effective" party member for the past three decades.

The Congress leaders of both the bodies said that Mr. Shivashankarappa was a contemporary of the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, and the Water Resources Minister, Mallikarjun Kharge, and asked why he was being sidelined. He had served the party and was being elected for the second time from Davangere.

The 37 Congress councillors in the CMC have sent their resignation letters to the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee President, B. Janardhana Poojary, and to the Chief Minister. The zilla panchayat members said they had written to all the top leaders of the party seeking Mr. Shivashankarappa's inclusion in the Cabinet and added that they would resign if the party failed to consider their demand.

The 14 Congress members of the Davangere Taluk Panchayat have also decided to resign for the same reason.
