BIJAPUR, JUNE 11. Sharanappa Ijeri from PDJ Junior College has become an instant celebrity here. Sharanappa secured the first rank in the Common Entrance Test (CET) in the engineering stream and is the first student from this region to achieve this feat. Sharanappa also secured the 3rd rank in the CET medical stream. There has been no let-up in the stream of people visiting his house since the results were announced. Besides the BDE Society, which runs the PDJ Junior College, and KSRTC Workers' Union, many individuals and non-governmental organisations felicitated Sharanappa today. According to sources, the city municipal council is also planning a reception for the CET topper. Talking to The Hindu, he said that he had also appeared for the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) entrance examination and hoped to join the IIT if he got through. His second choice, he said, would be the Electronics and Communication course at the National Institute of Technology (formerly known as REC), Suratkal. He plans to join the Indian Administrative Service after his graduation. Though he had been expecting a rank in the CET exam, he was surprised to hear that he had topped the exam. He obtained an average of 95.33 per cent with 100 per cent in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry in the PUC annual examination. He secured 92 marks in Biology, 85 in English, and 95 per cent in Sanskrit. He was a Kannada medium student up to SSLC, and switched over to English medium in PUC. In the SSLC exam, he got 100 marks in Mathematics and an overall percentage of 95. Sharanappa, who used to study eight hours a day, attributes his success to the guidance of his teachers and the encouragement by his parents. His father, Chennappa Ijeri, who works as Traffic Controller at the KSRTC (NWKRTC) bus-stand here, said that his son was free to choose his career. The Principal of the college, S.L. Pawar, seemed ecstatic as the bonanza came two years before the centenary celebration of the institution. He said that Sharanappa was the first boy, not just from the Bijapur district, but also the entire northern Karnataka region, to secure the first rank in the CET exam. The psychological barrier for the students from this educationally backward region had been broken. Sharanappa's feat would go a long way in boosting the confidence of the students of this region, he said.
