Kashmir leader dead

By Shujaat Bukhari

SRINAGAR, JUNE 11. The Leader of the Opposition in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly and senior National Conference leader, Ghulam Mohiuddin Shah, died here this morning after a prolonged illness. He was 78.

A former Minister and a close associate of the late Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, Mr. Shah had a chequered career as a political activist and jailed several times.

He was actively associated with the Plebiscite Front and remained in the forefront of Kashmir politics for several decades. A highly knowledgeable person, he belonged to one of the richest families in Kashmir.

Mr. Shah headed the State Autonomy Committee that formulated a comprehensive report envisaging restoration of autonomy to the State. The report formed the basis for the resolution passed by the Assembly, which, however, was summarily rejected by the previous BJP-led Government at the Centre.

The State Government announced a holiday to all its offices and educational institutions today as a mark of respect to Mr. Shah.
