Call for creating tourism estate near IGI Airport

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, JUNE 11. To promote the concept of a one-stop-shop for tourists visiting Delhi and thereby earn precious foreign exchange, the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry has suggested creation of a tourism estate or zone on a 250-acre plot preferably near Indira Gandhi International Airport here.

In a representation to the Union Tourism Minister, Renuka Chaudhry, PHDCCI has suggested that the land be suitably developed for integrated tourism development in the city as such proactive measures have become imperative in view of the forthcoming Commonwealth Games and also for developing tourism related infrastructure in a planned manner.

It said similar concepts exists in Indonesia where the Government has created such a zone in Bali called Nusa Dua, which has proved to be very successful. Such a measure, according to PHDCCI, would not only help in providing tourists a place where they can shop but would also ensure their personal security.

Noting that in view of the Government's plans to upgrade and modernise the Delhi airport, such development would be an added advantage, the PHDCCI has also proposed that the tourism estate include a convention centre with a seating capacity of 3,000 people, three five-star hotels, and two four star and three star hotels. It has also called for setting up around 20 restaurants, 35 offices of State tourism departments, 20 outlets for travel agents, tour operators, transport and car rental offices, a shopping mall with amphitheatre, one entertainment centre, a multiplex and a handicraft bazaar within the premises.

The Chairman of the Tourism and Civil Aviation Committee of PHDCCI, Anil Bhandari, said: "Once the tourism zone opens up, it would become the source of income for the State government and regular activities held in the complex would help it to sustain itself."
