Filing of FIR goes online

By Our Staff Reporter

The Director General of Police, P.K Hormese Tharakan, inaugurating the online registration of FIR by handing over a printout of the FIR to a road accident victim, Lijitha of Poonthura, in the city on Friday.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, JUNE 11. As the first step towards computerisation and networking of the police stations in the State, the Kerala Police today started registration of the First Information Report (FIR) through computers in the city traffic police station here.

Under the new system inaugurated by the Director General of Police, P.K Hormese Tharakan, the complainant can see the police personnel registering the FIR in computer. A copy of the FIR will also be provided to the complainant once it is registered.

A computer has been installed in the reception area of the traffic police station at Pattom. Once the complainant gives the statement the operator would feed it into the computer. The printouts of the FIR will be taken from the computer and the copies will be given immediately to the complainant and another will be sent to the court.

The Assistant Commissioners in charge of the North and South traffic sectors have also been provided with computers in their rooms to supervise the FIR registration at any time. According to traffic sources, the registration of FIR through computers will reduce the inordinate delay faced by the public, reduce paper work and prevent the tampering of the FIR and registration particulars of the vehicles involved in the accidents.

The IGP, State Crime Records Bureau, Paul Leslie; the DIG (Thiruvananthapruam Range), Arunkumar Sinha; the Acting City Police Commissioner, Balram Kumar Upadhaya; and the Assistant Commissioners (Traffic), S. Abdul Rasheed and A. J Thomas Kutty were present at the function.
